ANNAMARIA PENNAZZI

 

Annamaria arrived in London in 2012 with two suitcases, a determination to build a life in film, and a deep love of cinema and art.

 

She established herself in the industry as an Assistant Film Editor, contributing to major international productions including Tim Burton’s Dumbo, Joe Wright’s Cyrano, Robert Eggers’ The Northman and George Clooney’s The Boys in the Boat. For almost ten years, the cutting room has been her natural creative environment. Alongside her feature-film work, she has edited short films and commercials for clients including BBC Four and the National Trust.

Alongside her work on major international productions, Annamaria is developing her own projects as a writer-director. Her first short film, A Pig in a Cage on Antibiotics, earned her a nomination for Best Female Director Under 25 at Underwire Film Festival, the UK’s largest festival celebrating female film talent and a BAFTA-recognised festival. Her subsequent shorts, Sex, Drugs and Homelessness, Voices of the City and The Emotional Baggage, have also received recognition at festivals internationally.

Annamaria also works in experimental film, exploring alternative visual languages and narrative forms beyond conventional storytelling. Her latest experimental short, A Blink and a Whisper, about an eye that falls in love with a mouth, premiered at the Verbeke Museum as part of the Wunderground Film Festival. In the UK, it was nominated for Best Experimental Film at Carmarthen Bay Film Festival, a BAFTA and BIFA-qualifying festival.

She is currently in pre-production on her next short, The Anatomy of Anxiety, a surreal dark comedy in which human organs are the protagonists. She is also writing her first feature, Appraisal, a dark comedy about an overlooked artist at an auction house who secretly places her own work among that of a celebrated artist, exposing the systems that measure our worth and compelling her to reclaim her own.

Alongside filmmaking, Annamaria develops her visual practice through collage. As in editing, she builds narratives by arranging fragments into new relationships and meanings. Her collage work was featured in Perugia’s Loggia dei Lanari for a Kafka centenary tribute curated by Carlo Floris, from 28 September to 13 October 2023, and in a group exhibition at Finch Gallery in London, from 12 to 27 April 2024. She has also presented two solo, one-day immersive exhibitions at Odyssey Bar & Lounge in London, on 28 November 2024 and 24 April 2025.
